Telehealth Specialist Services: Q&A

We all knew this was coming... The Medicine Consultant industry is changing and it’s time for sub-specialists to also have the chance to change the way you work!

Thank you so much for being interested in telehealth with Specialist Medical and Therapy Solutions (SMTS). Prescript is delighted to share more information and help you get set up.

Telehealth gives you the fantastic option of using your time off or annual leave to work from a location that suits you. You can consult from your home office, hotel, holiday rental, caravan, or boat! It is an opportunity not to let work dictate where you need to be.

This Q&A is to help you understand the expectations around the working arrangements so you can decide if this could be right for you, both for now and for working in the future!

How will I see patients for speciality services via Telehealth?

Patients will be triaged to you based on case complexities and appropriate nonprocedural cases that are suitable for telehealth working arrangements.

Where do referrals come from?

Generally from GPs or Surgeons.

Are the patients all based out of their NSW clinic locations?

No, Specialist Medical and Therapy Solutions have a network of referrals across Australia, particularly in rural and regional Australia where there are extremely long waitlists to see specialists (12+ months in some locations). They use an online platform called ‘Access Telehealth’.

What hours/days can I work?

Anytime, it’s based on patient demand. Working hours are driven by your availability.

How am I paid?

Like most private clinics, you will be paid based on Medicare billings. You will keep 100% of your billings and will be paid into your account the next day. Based on an 8-hour working day, you could earn $1,800-$2,250 on the assumption you are seeing 8-10 patients a day on 45-minute appointments). Earnings can be higher or lower based on your preferences in how you like to practice.

What structure do I need to payments?

You can use an ABN or ACN for this arrangement and you need to be eligible for a Medicare provider number.

What support is available?

You will have a medical admin team supporting you with arranging your bookings based on your availability. Nurses are also available to be with the patients on a case-by-case basis to help you with the assessment based on availability and logistics. Patients are generally having their appointments with you at a GP clinic but they may also have appointments at home.

What do I need to prepare?

You will need to do an initial 30-minute training on how to use the software and the medical director can help if there are any issues. You will need to provide your own computer and home office set-up (which is tax-deductible).

How quickly can I see patients?

Immediately. You just need to let the clinic know what days and times you are available, and they will arrange and book in patients based on your patient time slot preferences. (You see as little as one patient a day and work in short blocks if it suits your schedule better (before and after your normal shifts).

Can I pick up hours on the weekends?

Yes. If the patients can be available on those days, you can absolutely pick up additional work on the weekends from your home.

Do I see patients as a one-off, or ongoing?

This is dependent on you, your time and your availability.
