A Doctor for Odede: The Global Impact of Everyday Recruitment

When we say every placement counts, we mean it — not just in Australia’s hospitals and clinics, but in places like Odede, a small village in western Kenya where access to healthcare was once nearly impossible.

Through our giving partnership with B1G1, Prescript set out to provide a full year’s salary for a doctor at the Odede Community Health Centre — a lifeline for families living in extreme poverty near Lake Victoria. With your help, we achieved that goal.

Why Odede?

Odede faces some of the highest rates of HIV/AIDS in Kenya. Maternal mortality is high, and for many, the nearest health facility is over 30km away — a journey too far when time is critical. The community-run health centre provides safe births, vaccinations, HIV testing, and essential care to thousands.

For a community like this, a single doctor means everything. And over the past year, thanks to every doctor who worked with us, every hospital that partnered with Prescript, we were able to fund that position in full.

The Ripple Effect

But the impact didn’t stop there. Together we also helped fund:

  • Over six months of nutritious meals for HIV-affected children
  • Five months of hospital maintenance to keep the centre running smoothly
  • One month of clean water for patients and their families

Every one of these contributions came from the everyday work of recruitment — from confirming a locum placement, to receiving a referral, to partnering with a regional health service that chose us to help find the right doctor.

What It Taught Us

Odede showed us that when you embed purpose into business, you don’t need grand gestures to make a difference. You just need commitment, consistency, and a community of people who care — like our Prescript team, our doctors, and the healthcare leaders we work with every day.

We’re proud of what we’ve achieved together. But we also know this is just the beginning.

One Million Days of Clean Water: How a Goal Became a Movement

At Prescript, we’ve always believed that recruitment should do more than solve hospital rosters — it should solve real-world problems.

That’s why, in 2020, we set ourselves an ambitious social impact goal: to provide one million days of clean water to communities in the Tigray region of Ethiopia.

We chose this goal for a simple reason. Clean water changes everything. It improves child survival rates, lifts the burden from women who spend hours collecting contaminated water, and gives girls the chance to stay in school. And through our partnership with B1G1 (Business for Good), we found a way to link every doctor placement, every referral, every successful search — to something much bigger.

How We Did It

Our approach was simple. We embedded giving into the rhythm of our business. Every time a doctor took a locum or permanent role through Prescript, we gave. When a doctor registered with us, referred a colleague, or completed a reference, we gave again. Every everyday action became a small act of global impact.

Even during the pandemic, and as civil conflict escalated in Tigray, we persisted — funding well repairs, restoring access, and staying connected to the communities we had committed to help. Along the way, we hit our one million day milestone, with clean water reaching thousands of families across dozens of villages.

Why It Matters Today

This isn’t just a milestone we’re proud of. It’s a legacy we’re building on. Being a medical recruitment agency means we’re already in the business of improving lives. But with this goal, we proved that placing a doctor in regional Australia can change lives on another continent, too.

As you read this, new wells are still being dug. Damaged infrastructure is being repaired. And most importantly, families in some of the world’s most vulnerable communities are healthier, safer, and more hopeful — all because of the doctors, hospitals, and team members who work with us.

Thank you for helping us prove that small acts, done consistently, can change the world.
