O&G and Medicine Recruitment Partner | Prescript's Interview with Marcia Beere

Hi, I'm Grace Clueit, I look after Vacancies, Marketing and Communications at Prescript Recruitment. I spoke with Marcia Beere to get the inside info on her role as Recruitment Partner at Prescript. I found out more about her experience and how she plays a leading role in helping O&G and Medicine doctors with the next step in their careers.

Marcia recruits for locum and permanent positions across regional Australia with a focus on Medicine and O&G. Marcia has worked in medical recruitment for ten years, in both hospital and agency settings.

What path did you take to get to Medical Recruitment Partner?

Marcia: New Zealand born, following a typical overseas experience in the UK, I moved back to Australia in the early 2000's and quickly established myself into a medical administration role via a temping agency. At the time the hospital was short-staffed and needed someone who had the ability to look at a problem and fix it. I enjoyed the problem-solving side of it and found being part of the candidate pathway from junior to consultant very fulfilling. I love being able to provide that strong support during critical points in peoples lives.

Being able to help hospitals stay fully-staffed and helping meet that community demand was my primary motivation to get into the full recruitment side. I also love the people contact. It’s so rewarding listening to the needs of both candidates and clients, tailoring positions to suit individual needs, and then being able to bring it all together.

What do you see as big issues within medical recruitment right now?

The biggest issue that we are helping to solve is the shortage in regional areas. It’s a consistent problem across the whole of Australia, excluding Sydney and Melbourne, and it is why we exist as an agency. Living in a regional area myself, I have seen the impact of the doctor shortage. It is continually challenging for hospital networks and I feel very privileged to be able to provide support and energy in addressing some of these challenges.

What are you doing differently for O&G and Medicine doctors?

I'm very specific in my approach and ensure I take the time to find the right roles to suit the right people, specifically avoiding the ‘one size fits all’ approach. I instead opt to spend more time making sure everything has been done properly and to the highest standard.

Quality over quantity is definitely something I focus on. As a company we won’t just partner with ‘anyone’ and we take our time to provide a bespoke, personalised service. The proof is in the meaningful, long term relationships that we’ve created with both candidates and clients alike.

Did you know…?

Marcia lives in Bega, the rural heartland of the Sapphire Coast, and also the home of Bega Cheese! When she’s not helping rural hospitals find the doctors that they need, she’s looking after her family and working on the farm with her cows, what a woman!

You’ve been working in medical recruitment for a long time now, do you have any predictions for the future careers of doctors in Australia?

While working in health care facilities, we would look forward to a tsunami of doctors to flood through our hospitals. For whatever reason, we’re not seeing these extra doctors translate into extra staff, at least not in the regional areas where the demand is increasing. I am a tree-changer who moved from the city to the fields of a regional centre and I am not unique in this change. Many people are choosing to relocate away from the hustle and bustle of a city and enjoy what the regional centres have to offer. It is great to be able to help grow the services by placing doctors in some of these areas.

This is something where there isn’t just one simple fix and the problem isn’t going to go away anytime soon. Having more medical graduates is one factor in reducing the shortage of doctors of course but there are other factors too. Many of these graduates will end up as specialists in cities and working in private practices but that doesn’t help with the shortage in public sectors in regional areas

What do you enjoy / what frustrations do you have about your role?

I enjoy having long term relationships with people and really getting to know them – both doctors and clients. Seeing doctors progress through their career and working with clients for such long periods of time is great. I don’t think that I’d have the same kind of ongoing relationships if I were working in a different industry.

Knowing that I work for a passionate company, who wants to make a difference is an amazing feeling and is truly demonstrated through our interactions with candidates and clients. I continue to enjoy the field that I have invested a lot of time into and being able to carry that on is a real honour.

One frustration I tend to encounter is dealing with bureaucracy and working within not one, but multiple public health systems that all have their own idiosyncrasies. For example, if you are credentialed to work full time in one state health service, that doesn’t mean you are credentialed to work as a locum in that same state health service, and instead need to almost start as if the candidate is a brand-new person within the system.

This is one of the wider frustrations of working within health – everyone feels it. It is, however, something that is there for a positive reason and it’s important that these procedures are in place to protect doctors and hospitals.
