Tasmania – Radiologist Locums – And Top Tourist Tips!

LINKEDIN FRIENDLY IMAGES - 2019-07-11T145401.519.png

After a recent visit to North and North West Tasmania, I’m delighted to be able to share some insights into this beautiful part of Australia.

Having also met the staff at the hospitals and medical centres that you would work with on a locum, I feel confident to recommend this as a genuinely friendly, supportive medical community where you will be welcomed and well looked after throughout your stay, whether it’s just for a week, or for a longer block.

If you would like to take the chance to explore over the weekends during or either side of your locum too, please do check the links and ideas below – Work/Life balance is always healthy!

In the North and North West of Tasmania, there are locum location options that include the beautiful city of Launceston and some regional spots such at as Burnie and Devonport - All with warm, friendly communities, great food, wine and local produce – Plus stunning coastal scenery.

Dates below are week blocks from now to the end of 2019 (Just let me know too if you’d like to look at some early 2020 dates to plan ahead).

Doctors - Seven Top Tips For Permanent Job Applications

3.png
Hello, I’m Nicola Speer - Prescript’s Senior Recruitment Partner. In this article, we explore best techniques for doctors to find and secure a permanent role that meets your criteria – clinical, financial and lifestyle.

Firstly – What are your reasons for looking for a new role? Getting an understanding of this helps define the steps you can take.

Some possible reasons are:

➕ “I’m keen to take the next step forward in my career, gain experience in a more senior role, or one that gives me specific exposure to particular modalities / interventional work I have trained in.”

➕ “Location – for my family and me, we would like a move to somewhere better suited to our lifestyle, but I still want to have a well remunerated, clinically challenging role – Even with a sea change/tree change.”

➕ “I have been working in an Area of Need (or DWS) role, and am now eligible to seek positions in locations that are outside that restriction so would like to find the right role and location for myself and my family.”

➕ “For me, it’s about earning capacity; I feel I can get a better remuneration package and conditions elsewhere but it’s not easy to explore all options without spending time and effort, and potentially breaching the confidentiality I wish to maintain at this early stage.”

➕ “I have been approved to find a role that meets Area of Need specifications. We wish to move to Australia but don’t know where to start.”

➕ “I’m not actively looking for a new role; however, I always like to keep an open mind with opportunities that come up.”

Whatever your motivation and reason, I would suggest some of the following tips/ideas to get started, and see you through to being settled and happy in a new role.

1.Start Early

Before you even form a plan, have a confidential discussion where you can begin to gather information to better enable you to make good decisions.

ACTION: Book in a confidential call with one of Prescript’s Senior Recruitment Partners - Nicola Speer or Rebecca Doyle – Both have extensive experience and enjoy listening to your initial thoughts and ideas, work-shopping, giving opinions and information and looking at specific roles to explore further based on your criteria.

3.png

2.List your Criteria and Questions

➕ What can I not compromise on?

➕ What are reasonably flexible points for me?

➕ What are my top 3 motivating factors for seeking a new role, or considering one that comes up?

➕ What should I expect in a new position? (Sometimes it’s hard to know how our current situation compares to others in the market – we can help with comparisons)

3.Define a Clear Picture of your Current Situation

List what you would define as ‘Push Factors’ (Factors that are either negative, or lacking in your current role and therefore act as motivators to seek a better situation) and ‘Pull Factors” (What would really appeal in a new position and draw you towards it – money, location, clinical interest, promotion/progression, leadership, team/environment etc).

4.Think About Time Frame

Is there a date for you that would be ideal for securing and starting in a new role? OR, are you flexible and would rather wait for the right position to be found?

We strongly suggest giving yourself as much leeway as possible from the time you start having initial conversations, to securing a position. This takes into account the process needed to look at positions, make visits, negotiate and obtain a role, as well as attend to your current work and living commitments so that you can have adequate notice and time to move.

DID YOU KNOW?

Most of the permanent roles we work with doctors to secure are not advertised formally

TOP TIP: Don’t sit back and wait to see your ideal position on a website or industry publication.

Instead, be proactive – Speak to us, even if it’s just to say that you want to keep a new role on the radar, and what this would potentially look like.

Doctors who have done this, consistently end up securing a position that is tailored to their needs and wishes and often exceeds their first thoughts.

5.Explore and Get Certainty

In the job seeking process, we adopt a transparent and positive flow of communication that supports you as a radiologist to get a full understanding of the prospective role before you make any commitment.

This includes:

✔️ In depth discussions of all aspects of a role including: position/scope/location/future growth/remuneration/benefits.

✔️ Talking to clinicians and directors (once you’re happy to) in order to explore options and discuss first hand.

✔️ Visit – Whether for a paid locum where you meet people but also experience hands-on, the site/s, OR, if you’ve flown/travelled there to meet and discuss (this is a critical part of understanding if a particular role is the right one for you - we will facilitate and organise all logistics if this for you).

6.Money

We know its an important factor and will support you in negotiating a salary/remuneration package, plus benefits that suit you. We work with providers in both the public hospital system and the private sector, that recognise talent and consistently reward radiologists with the best packages.

Coastal.jpg

7.Location, Family and Lifestyle

It’s not all about work, even though it’s often the major factor that shapes our decisions.

Family requirements - now and in the future – partner’s work/children and schooling play a huge part in the job seeking process, and this is something we discuss and factor in right from first discussion.

Location – We all like different places and climates. Identifying what these factors are for you will really make a place feel like home and is an important part of job seeking.

Lifestyle – Why compromise on health and happiness? We don’t want you to do this, and that’s why we consult closely with you to find out what this means for you and your family.

We genuinely hope that you feel comfortable to speak to us, even if it’s an initial discussion that’s about general ideals and thoughts and you’re not necessarily active yet in looking at a new position – We are here for long term assistance and to support you in your career as a doctor.

How Prepared Are You For Application Season? Marcia's Top Tips

Our Prescript Quality Standards - PQS (1).png
My extensive experience of medical administration in several hospitals means I have seen first hand how the doctor shortage impacts regional communities. I am committed to helping solve this issue.

Hello – I’m Marcia Beere – Recruitment Partner at Prescript. It’s that time of year again where we start to see health services open the recruitment door for the future intake of 2020.

Applications seem like they are open forever, but in reality, with life getting so busy, before you know it you have until midnight to submit everything that you think is needed. I thought I’d share with you a few helpful hints to try and assist you in the last-minute scurry.

Applications seem like they are open forever, but in reality, with life getting so busy, before you know it you have until midnight to submit everything that you think is needed.

Perfect Your Resume

Update your CV - Include important details, such as; the rotations you have completed or are about to complete, research that you are helping to collect data for, teaching sessions that you have presented or provided assistance in presenting. All these things help a panel understand your interests and help them to visualise where you will fit into their department

Keep In Touch With Referees

It’s important to keep in contact with your referees. Make sure you have contacted them to alert them you will need their input. It helps if you can give them a rundown on where and why you have placed applications

Prescript - 2018 Feb_22679 crop long .jpg

Understand The Selection Criteria

It mostly seems unimportant when you are applying for a clinical role, but it is CRITICAL. When the positions are competitive and the volumes so high, the reviewing panel wants to know you have taken the time to review what you are applying for and that there is an interpreted understanding of the role and the tasks.

Connect With The Contact Officer

Most positions may not have a contact officer, particularly if they are bulk round applications. However, call the hospital and ask to speak with the JMO Manager or Director of Medical Workforce. Ask about the hospital and the training environment.

Not only do you become more than just a CV and selection criteria, but it will also give you a touch of insight into the culture of that organisation. Are they engaging? Are they willing to share information and show an interest in you? Will there be more opportunities other than this initial 12 months?

Be Flexible With Interviews

I get it; it is not always possible to be available at the exact time and date that you are requested for. However, there are few things to consider – you are in pool of a number of other candidates who can be available, constructing a panel of senior clinicians is also very complex and trying to reschedule their time is difficult.

Phone interviews are not the worst thing. Yes, it can be a challenge to strike up a rapport through the phone, but it is possible. Hospitals understand that it is a critically busy time with ongoing interviews around the country, and they will make allowances if they can.

anete-lusina-382329-unsplash.jpg

What To Wear

Appearance is important! Dress smart Be clean and tidy. Scrubs are fine if you are mid-shift or coming off/starting a shift (make sure they are clean).

Ask Questions

During your interview, don’t be afraid to ask questions about the unit. How busy does it get? What supervision is there? What are the majority of presentations? What are the teaching opportunities? Are there any research or ongoing audits you can be a part of in the department?

Quality Assurance

Hospitals are ever increasing in their demand for better health outcomes, no matter how small. Think of a time that you did something to improve an outcome. Did you research it? Did you organise for the department you were in to complete an audit and gather data?

Declining An Offer

If it wasn’t what you were looking for, the sooner you can provide a withdraw notice of a position, the better. Many hours and planning are put into any recruitment cycle and departments rely on knowing where their staffing numbers are up within a reasonable amount of time.

Prescript - 2018 Feb_22635 crop long .jpg

Be Yourself

Last but not least, be yourself, it’s so important to be you! You are your own best advocate.

You can let us know if you want to bring your family and if you have any special requirements.

The second stage is an informal application – we will arrange a phone call or a review of your skills to establish if this is going to be a good fit.
