Locum GP – Western NSW | $1,800/day | 4-Week Aboriginal Health Placement with Purpose

Make an impact where it matters most.

This is more than just a four-week locum. It’s a chance to step into a purpose-built, culturally grounded health setting in far western New South Wales—and deliver meaningful care to a community that values your presence deeply.

If you’re a GP looking for more than a routine locum, this is an opportunity to connect your skills to real community need, supported by a team who’ve made Aboriginal health their life’s work.

The Role

You’ll be part of a well-established Aboriginal primary health service in a remote town on Barkindji Country, located along the Baaka (Darling River). The clinic is newly built, located just 100 metres from your accommodation, and was designed in partnership with the local community to deliver holistic, culturally safe, and entirely primary care-focused services.

This is a clinic-only role, focused entirely on primary care. No hospital shifts, no on-call, and no after-hours required. The service provides a broad range of care — from general consultations and chronic disease management to mental health, child and family health, and visiting specialist clinics.

You’ll work alongside a multidisciplinary team that includes a Nurse Manager, Registered Nurses, Aboriginal Health Practitioners, and reception staff — all delivering respectful, community-led care.

  • Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM
  • No weekends, after-hours, or hospital-based work
  • Best Practice software
  • Bulk-billed, community-first model of care

About the Location

The placement is based in Wilcannia, a small outback town in the Central Darling Shire of northwestern New South Wales. With a population of around 539 people, approximately 62% of whom identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, Wilcannia is a place of deep cultural heritage and significance.

Located on the Baaka (Darling River), this historic town was once a major inland port and is now known for its proud Barkindji identity, heritage sandstone buildings, and strong community ties. The pace is slower here, the skies are bigger, and the work you do has immediate impact.

Wilcannia experiences a desert climate with hot summers and mild winters. It is accessible by road from Broken Hill (just under 200 km), and by car from major cities: approximately 965 km northwest of Sydney and about 715 km northeast of Adelaide.

While Wilcannia has a small local airport, the nearest commercial flights operate via Broken Hill Airport, with road transfers to the town arranged as part of this role.

Dates Available

1st September – 26th September 2025 (fixed 4-week placement)

What’s Included

  • $1,800 per day (ABN)
  • Self-contained accommodation with Wi-Fi and air conditioning (100m from clinic)
  • Vehicle provided for local use
  • All flights covered from anywhere in Australia to Broken Hill and return
  • Car provided at Broken Hill Airport for the 2-hour drive to site
  • Optional weekend accommodation in Broken Hill arranged for rest and exploration

Who This Is For

  • Current Specialist AHPRA Registration (FRACGP or FACRRM)
  • Experience in Aboriginal Medical Services or rural/remote practice is ideal
  • You care about community-led care and bring a respectful, flexible, team-first attitude
